Matthias van den Heuvel is an Associate with the Brattle Group in New York. He holds a PhD in economics from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and did his Master's at the Graduate Institute Geneva and Yale University.

Dr. van den Heuvel's primary fields are environmental & energy economics, entrepreneurial finance and applied econometrics. His work draws on various statistical methods, from using econometric analysis in order to demonstrate causality to building machine learning models to extract information from newspaper articles.

He has produced analysis for a variety of litigation and arbitration matters, including the estimation of the economic benefit resulting from non-compliance with environmental regulations. Prior to joining the Brattle Group, Matthias worked as an economist for a private bank and for the World Trade Organization (WTO). He is experienced translating finance and economic theory into practice for a wide range of audiences.

His academic research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and has helped inform policy-making. His work received financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
